GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR READERS
ST. AUGUSTINE'S PARISH, DUNDAS

  • © The Readers go to the front vesting sacristy and sign in as                        Readers.
  • © The First Reader on the list:
    • Ø Fills in the names required on the Commentator's sheet.
    • Ø Makes the opening introductions and commentary.
    • Ø Reads the first reading.
      • v At the 5:30 pm. Mass the Cantor announces the               hymns.
      • v At the 9:00 am. Mass, the Contemporary Choir               announces the hymns.
      • v At the 10:30 am. Mass, the Senior Choir announces        the hymns.
      • v In the absence of choir or cantor, the Reader                     announces the hymns.
  • © The Second Reader on the list:
    • Ø Carries the Book in the procession.
    • Ø Reads the second reading.
    • Ø Leads the prayer of the Faithful.
  • © The Celebrant will gather everyone for a blessing just before the liturgy is to begin. The First Reader/Commentator together with the Cantor goes to the pulpit and introduce the Liturgy, (and announces the hymn when applicable).

  • © The Second Reader, holding the Book, joins the procession in the position immediately behind the Altar Servers, stopping to the left of the Servers at the foot of the altar steps for the genuflection. The reader enters the sanctuary ahead of the Servers and the Celebrant.

  • © Leaving the sanctuary at the end of Mass:
    • Ø Begin to move as the Celebrant leaves the Chair
    • Ø Bring the book and the Commentator's card.
    • Ø Form the procession in the order you entered.

When making the introductions do not say, “the Reflection”. Simple read the reflection.

To introduce the readings simply read the introduction in the text i.e. (A Reading from ………) (Avoid saying, “The first reading …..; The second reading …...; )

Do not say “Please stand”, following the second reading. It leaves the option for a few moments of reflection.
Lighter voices need to move closer to the microphone and project your voice.
Read slowly, articulate, considering those with hearing difficulties. (See over)

Some notes on “Rubrics” for our Readers.

    • In the interest of uniformity and as an update in the recommend procedures for readers provided by our office of Liturgy, I have compiled these directions for our Readers at St. Augustine’s.

      1. Be sure to review our General Instructions for Readers.

      2. When carrying the Book in procession, it should be carried just below face level, with arms slightly expended outward.

      3. After you complete the Introduction to the Mass, go directly to the Reader’s bench, not waiting for the procession to arrive.

      4. When introducing the reading, say only: “A reading from the book of ……..” Do not say, “the first reading” “the second reading”, say only the title given in back type in the Lectionary. Conclude with: “The Word of the Lord.” Not “This is …….etc.”

      5. Please do not move the ribbon marker forward as you turn the page in the book. It is not necessary since the book is not closed between readings and it is needed to mark the beginning of the readings for the next mass anyway.

      6. Be sure to speak loudly, especially if your natural voice is soft or light. The microphones are set at maximum volume short of feedback. A soft voice can be as close as six inches to the microphone. Strong voices distort the sound at this position. Twelve inches will sound better. Raise your voice to create a more natural volume. Read Slowly.

      7. For the Prayer of the Faithful, begin to approach the pulpit as soon as the Creed has concluded, while the Celebrant is making the introduction to the Prayer of the Faithful.

      8. If the Reader is announcing the hymns, announce the Communion Hymn just before you go to receive Communion.

      9. When the liturgy has concluded, wait until the Celebrant begins to leave the Chair before leaving your seat to retrieve the book and go to the steps to form the procession out. Walk out of the sanctuary on the inner side (altar) of the pulpit.
